SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - Stocks in Asia made a limp leap on Thursday with most indices closing in the black.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 advanced 97.76 points or 0.34 percent to 28,958.56.
China's Shanghai Composite rose 17.19 points or 0.48 percent to 3,608.59.
The Australian All Ordinaries edged up 36.80 points or 0.49 percent to 7,558.80.
The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong inched down 3.72 points or 0.01 percent to 28,738.88.
On foreign exchange markets, there was virtually no movement. The euro drifted around 1.2168. The British pound was a fraction weaker at 1.4096. The Japanese yen was a fraction higher at 109.47. The Swiss franc inched up to 0.8959.
The Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand dollars were unchanged at 1.2115, 0.7738 and 0.7182 respectively.
Overnight on Wall Street, the Dow Jones tumbled 152.66 points or 0.44 percent to 34,447.14.
The Standard and Poor's 500 dipped 7.71 points or 0.18 percent at 4,219.55 after touching a new record high.
The Nasdaq Composite fell 13.16 points or 0.09 percent to 13,911.75.
